The March Against Monsanto

Alright people, let’s do this!

Are you anti-Monsanto/GMO like I am?  Are you tired of hearing my rants on that disgusting company?  Well, get ready for some more.

There’s so much information out there on how terrible Monsanto is and what they are doing to our food supply, so I’ll attach links and references for your viewing displeasure.

March Against Monsanto

What I wanted to let you know about and hope that you will get involved in, is this March Against Monsanto happening THIS SATURDAY, MAY 25th at 2pm around the world!  Yup, that’s right; the entire globe is marching against this company to get them to go the truck away and STOP killing/contaminating us and our food supply.  If you don’t believe me, check out March Against Monsanto‘s (MAM) site and where the events are taking place.  It’s nuts I tell ya!

I have never done anything like this, but it is my intent to march with some of my family members, if they’ll support me.  Originally I thought I’d be here in Dallas marching, but it looks like we will be in Austin, which is awesome, because I know they will have a BIG event being the crunchy city that they are.  I’m so pumped to be a part of something that is potentially HUGE!

No to Monsanto

You know there’s something wrong with this company when there are countries outlawing Roundup, their seeds and food, etc. from being grown and sold there.  America can only try to get their GMO foods labeled rather than get them the truck out, period.  There was even a Monsanto rider that got passed a few months ago and it sounds like another rider is coming up later this year that supports them.  It literally gets my blood boiling!

Just say no to GMO

If you’ve never done anything like this, I ask you to consider it.  I think it’s time we start evaluating what is important to us and take a stand.  If you like sitting idly by while the government decides what’s healthy for us and for our kids to eat, than by all means, ignore this post.  But, if you’re passionate like me, and tired of them slowly poisoning us, then take a stand.  Find where the closest march is and rally up the troops family.  Make it a point to show your kids that you care about what they are ingesting and that you want this company to stop this heinous crime.

You may think it’s a bit extreme, but check out the multitude of Facebook pages, websites, and articles dedicated to stopping this company.  I’m not alone in my utter dislike for this company and neither should you be.  Spread the word and let’s get marching!

Natural Grocers In Denton, Texas

Sorry I’ve been M.I.A. this week, my hubby and I got some stomach bug, so I’ve been wiped out.

I did want to let you know about the grand opening of Natural Grocers in Denton, TX.  If you have never been nor heard of them, check out their site to find the one closest to you.  I love this place and will drive the extra miles, past Sprout’s & Whole Foods, to get the best bang for my buck.

Natural Grocers in Denton Texas

Natural Grocers only sells certified organic produce, naturally raised meats, and in my opinion, have the best prices when it comes to their packaged goods.

I’ve been hooked from the moment their first store opened up and it’s not hard to see why.  Here’s a note from their Director of Marketing:

“We have been around since 1955 and are cornerstoned in Customer Service as well as Nutritional Education. We strive to offer a very large inventory of all natural and organic groceries, dairy items, bulk items, prepacked items, frozen, all natural raised and fed meats and poultry, all natural and GF supplements and a large body care section for the shoppers that are looking for all natural and environmental products at the some of the lowest industry prices.”

I love this store for so many reasons: 1) it’s small so it feels like a neighborhood market, 2) everyone is super friendly there, and 3) they are anti-GMO!  Yeah buddy!

My crunchy friend, Casey, went with Emma and me and we were like kids in candy stores!  We went up and down every aisle, checked and rechecked the fresh, beautiful produce, and were finally able to select our purchases.  I got two Against the Grain pizzas for dinner that night, along with fresh toppings, and Casey ended up with a case of Kombucha for $1.65/bottle!  That is a freakin’ steal…that stuff is normally $3.49 a pop, so she totally loaded up.  We were both loving the Grand Opening specials, that’s for sure.

Also, this new store has a gathering area and shiny, lime green Demo kitchen.  I can definitely foresee some gluten-free/paleo cooking demos coming, and can’t wait to be #1 in line!  Their first event was entitled ‘Bacon Brigade’ and was slated for last night, but sadly I had to miss.  You know I love me some bacon and was bummed I missed the sampling.  Oh well, there’s always next time.

There you have it, my quick recap of a health food store (that’s finally close to me) that I’m in lurve with!

Have you ever been to a Vitamin Cottage or Natural Grocers, or is this our first time hearing about them?  Check them out when you get a chance or request one in your area, you won’t be disappointed!

I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend, and feels better if you’ve been sick like me.

Gluten-Free In Dallas: Unrefined Bakery

Remember when I told you last week about Tu-Lu’s Gluten-Free Bakery here in Dallas and NYC? Well, there’s another bakery in town, called Unrefined Bakery (formerly Wholesome Foods Bakery) and they are…

“a totally Gluten-Free bakery created by Anne and Taylor, a mother/daughter Celiac, Lactose-Intolerant duo. We were tired of the crumbly, dry options we found as Celiacs, and the lack of great Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free choices.”

This one is located in East Dallas by White Rock Lake, and I have to say, after poking around down there at one of the farmer’s market, I kind of wished I lived closer.  Though knowing me, I’d be at the bakery every.dang.day and not be sticking to my Paleo lifestyle (stupid dairy and carbs), so it’s probably a good thing.

Speaking of Paleo, they do offer several choices like sandwich bread, dinner  rolls, and even holiday stuffing.  I scored some on my last visit and it was delicious…though I wasn’t too excited about the price.  I know you have to pay more for gluten-free but I guess I should have asked before my heart said yes.  The Paleo bread and rolls are pretty good, though I feel they could use a smidge more salt in them.  It has been a nice substitute, though,  for making the occasional sandwich or for a vehicle for my pulled pork sliders.

The thing that really impressed me is that their products are/use gluten-free, soy-free, organic, unrefined sugars, non-GMO, and more!  It’s not often that I can go anywhere period  to get a gluten-free AND grain-free sandwich with HOMEMADE MAYO.  Get outta town!  Oh, they also use Applegate Farms Organic and Natural lunch meats, so I know I’m getting the best possible option out there (read: no nitrites, nitrates, hormones, etc.).

On top of the homemade mayo goodness, they offer organic almond and coconut milk, for those that want to add  them to their morning Joe without using dairy.  I have to say I love what they are doing but I know I won’t frequent them that often for the sheer fact of my lifestyle.  And maybe it’s because I don’t eat sweets that much anymore, but their sweet treats are sahweeet!  Woo doggy, I am not used to that much sugar…though Emma had no problem gobbling it up.  Too much sugar for this mama’s comfort.

Check them out if you’re ever in town or want to place an order online-they ship nationwide for those peeps who don’t have access to gluten and grain-free fare like I do.

Oh, and I have to add, when I was visiting there the last time, they had just installed three different flavors of Kombucha on tap!  Ha!  Since I’ve finally gotten on the ‘booch train, I will have to check it out next time I’m their neck of the woods.

Gimme some sugar…have you ever been to or heard of these two gluten-free bakeries?  Does this inspire you to go online right this second and order you some goodies for the holidays?

Genetic Roulette: Monsanto’s Control Over GMOs

‘You’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?’

Fat chance!

I just finished watching an astonishing documentary last night called Genetic Roulette.

I’m not sure how to put this mildly but EVERY.SINGLE.PERSON.NEEDS.TO.WATCH.THIS!!!

If you remotely care about what you put in yours and your child’s bodies please watch this. http://geneticroulettemovie.com/

I tend to be overly passionate on certain topics and this one is HUGE to me.  My promise, as I’ve said before, is that I don’t want to preach but rather to educate.  Preaching gets us nowhere and definitely turns people away…not my goal.

The premise of the movie is talking about GMOs and what they have done to us as a human race and how they contribute to a lot of our ailments these days.  It’s said that from the mid 90s (when GMOs were introduced), chronic illnesses have nearly doubled-think allergies, autoimmune diseases (Celiac Disease), inflammation, thyroid disease, heart disease, etc.  In 1996, GM corn and soy were introduced into our food supply and since then, digestive issues have severely been on the rise.

For those unaware of them:

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Organisms that have been genetically modified include micro-organisms such as bacteria and yeast, plants, fish, and mammals. GMOs are the source of genetically modified foods, and are also widely used in scientific research and to produce useful goods other than food.-Wikipedia

The film is put out by Jeffrey M. Smith and tagline for the film is this:

Are you and your family on the wrong side of a bet?

When the US government ignored repeated warnings by its own scientists and allowed untested genetically modified (GM) crops into our environment and food supply, it was a gamble of unprecedented proportions. The health of all living things and all future generations were put at risk by an infant technology.
After two decades, physicians and scientists have uncovered a grave trend. The same serious health problems found in lab animals, livestock, and pets that have been fed GM foods are now on the rise in the US population. And when people and animals stop eating genetically modified organisms (GMOs), their health improves.
This seminal documentary provides compelling evidence to help explain the deteriorating health of Americans, especially among children, and offers a recipe for protecting ourselves and our future.

I really can’t put into words how disturbing the information was.  Do me a favor and curl up on the couch tonight or in front or your computer this weekend and WATCH THIS!  It’s free for viewing until November 6th, and as they say, ‘It’s a MUST SEE!’

I’ve always heard bad things about Monsanto and knew not to use Roundup, but know you will know why.  It’s unfathomable what this company is doing to our planet let alone the people of the ENTIRE world.  Please educate yourself and STOP buying GMOs.  We need to take back our food and our children’s health.

Pass this onto your loved ones and let’s start educating one another and stop living in the dark.  We deserve to know what’s in our food (Prop 37) and to stop these companies from controlling the world and what we eat!

Let me know if you do watch this documentary and what you think.  I’m definitely on a mission to get this crap out of my body, especially when going out to eat or to friend’s houses!
